Rain has returned to Sauipe today, Monday, forcing changes to the match scheduling of the Brazil Open 2003. Of the 12 matches that were scheduled, six were played out, only two of which were from the Main Draw. The downpours got worse in the evening and organizers were forced to postpone the rest of today¿s play till 12.45 on Tuesday.
Vincent Spadea (USA) vs. Guillermo Cañas (ARG), Rainer Schuettler (GER) x André Sá and Flávio Saretta(BRA)/Juan Chela (ARG) vs. Nathan Healey/Jordan Kerr (AUS) didn¿t even make it onto court.
Three matches were interrupted then eventually postponed until Tuesday. Paraguayan Ramón Delgado was getting the better of Argentinean Mariano Puerta, 6/3, 5/1, whilst Frenchman Gregory Carraz had the upper hand on Alexander Popp from Germany 4/1 in the first set. In the Doubles, Martin Garcia (ARG)/Graydon Oliver (USA) were one set up on Brazilians Pedro Braga/Júlio Silva - 6/1, 2/2.
The main draw, which was supposed to get well under way today Monday only saw two full matches completed. American Paul Goldstein knocked out Argentinean Federico Browne, 6/2 - 6/0, whilst Australian Wesley Moodie booked his place in the next round by beating Peruvian Ivan Miranda, 6/4 - 6/4.
Other matches played today confirmed those going through from qualifying to the main draw. The only Brazilian to guarantee his place was "paulista" Júlio Silva, who sent Australian Jordan Kerr home early with a 2/6, 7/5, 6/0 victory. Chilean Paul Capdeville overcame American-Brazilian Josh Goffi, 7/6, 7/5; Argentinean Gaston Etlis beat American Andrés Pedroso, 6/4, 6/2; Michael Quintero from Columbia knocked out Japanese Thomas Shimada, 6/7, 6/1, 6/2.
