Sjeng Schalken from Holland was awarded a walkover to the final of the Brazil Open 2003. His opponent from Argentina Gaston Etlis, lost the first set 6/1 and threw in the towel at 2 sets to love down, blaming an injury.
In the show down for this year's title, second Seed Schalken will meet the winner of Saturday's match between Brazilian Gustavo Kuerten x Rainer Schuettler from Germany.
Etlis had progressed from qualifying with an effective serve and volley, but it wasn't enough to match the Dutchman's rock solid baseline play. The Argentinean held his serve only once in the fifth game of the first set.
In the sixth he required medical attention at courtside, then struggled on to lose the set 6/1. In the second set, Schalken broke serve again in the first game but the South American was unable to continue and abandoned the game.
